The error CE-30005-8 on the PS4 is caused by two things, either a Software issue or a hardware fault. With that said, we will first go through with the software issue so that we see how the system software can causes the error CE-30005-8 on the PS4 and then later talk about the hardware fault.

Software Issue

The PS4 like any other device uses a system software to operate. This system software commonly know as Operating system can get corrupt on the PS4. If that's the case, then it maybe what is causing the error CE-30005-8 on the PS4. Well if it is a software issue, then good for us as these issues are easy to fix.

There are a number of software issues that may cause the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application to pop up while you try to start your game. Lets go through some software causes for this error.

1. Games is corrupt

One of the most common causes of the error CE-30005-8 under the software issue is a corrupt game itself. When the game is corrupt you will get the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application. There are many ways in which a game can get corrupt on the PS4 these include:
  • Fragmented hard drive.
  • Installation interruption.
  • Deleted files.
These are the things that usually cause the game to get corrupted and bring the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application.

2. System software

Another cause of the error CE-30005-8 under the software issue is a bad system software. This is quite uncommon but it happens. If you have a bad system software the PS4 will be failing to read files on the hard drive, game disk or even the extended storage.

This is because the system software is compromised and doesn't know what to do. This is usually accompanied with some freezing and lagging of the console.

Hardware fault

The hardware is the most common cause for the error CE-30005-8 on the PS4. We have seen even Sony itself suggests that the error is a hardware issue but doesn't explain very much on the issue and only suggests you send it in.

Well sending your console in can be a pain in the ass, you will have to wait or even pay some money if you are out of warranty.

Let's now go through the hardware faults that causes the error CE-30005-8 on the PS4

1. Hard drive is faulty

When the hard drive is faulty you will get the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application. This usually happens because the PS4 is unable to access the data on the hard drive. When this happens the PS4 will bring you the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application.

It can also be that you are installing your physical game disk, but then the internal hard drive in the PS4 is faulty and the PS4 fails to write the data on the hard drive. The console will then bring you the error CE-30005-8 to tell you It's unable to access the hard drive.

This usually happens when the hard drive is starting to fail, is fragment, starting to have bad sectors or it is physically damaged.

When any of these happens you are likely to have the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application while you try to install your digital game, physical game or even starting you game.

2. Optical Drive (Blu-ray drive) is faulty

This is one of the common causes of the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application on the PS4. If the Optical drive is faulty the error CE-30005-8 will only come up when you are trying to install a physical game disk. If you are trying to start a digital game then consider the hard drive been the culprit.

When the Optical Drive fails to read data from the physical game disk, It will bring the error CE-30005-8. This is to tell you that the PS4 is unable to read data on the disk. This usually happens when the optical drive is faulty, or the Blu-ray lens has dust particles on it.

If any of the above is present the Optical drive will fail to read the disk and the error CE-30005-8 will pop up on your PS4.

3. Physical Game Disk is damaged

Now this is one of the most common causes of the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application under the hardware faults. A physically damaged disk will bring the error CE-30005-8 when you try to install the game on your console. It will usually install part of it or not install any at all before it throws you the error CE-30005-8.

This can be frustrating but it happens because your game disk is scratched, has finger prints dust, or it was exposed to sunlight/heat.

When any of the above is present the Optical drive will fail to read the game disk and will bring you the error CE-30005-8.

Since we have talked about what causes the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application on the PS4. Let us now see how we can fix this error considering we know what causes it.

We are now going to divide the fix exactly as we did with the causes. So we will first start with the software fixes and then go to the hardware.

Fix software issue

The error CE-30005-8 on the PS4 can be fixed using various software techniques depending on what type of software bug the PS4 has. Let us now go through some software issues and how to fix the error cannot start application.

1. Game is corrupt

When the game is corrupt the PS4 will bring you the error CE-30005-8. There are different ways in which the game can get corrupt as we looked at them in what causes the game to be corrupt above.

Fragmented Hard drive

A fragmented hard drive will cause the game to be corrupt and bring you the the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application. This is because the system software for the PS4 is unable to get the files for a certain game you want to start as it's file are scattered across the hard drive.

When that happens the PS4 will consider the game to be corrupt as it has failed to get all the files needed to start your game.

To fix this issue you have to defragment your hard drive. You may be wondering how do I defragment my Hard drive on the PS4? Well it's simple, Defragging your hard drive on the PS4 is equivalent to Rebuild database.

To Rebuild database on the PS4 Follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off your PS4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the on button until you hear a second beep.
  3. Connect the PS4 controller through a USB cable and press the PS button.
  4. Select option 5 [Rebuild database] and follow the on screen instructions.

Installation Interrupted

When the installation of an application is interrupted you will get the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application. This is because the files needed to run the game are not complete. The installation can be interrupted because of a power outage or unable to read from the game disk.

To fix this issue you will have to uninstall the game and reinstall it again. This will reinstall the files altogether with the ones that were not installed in the first place.

2. System Software

If the issue is with the system software, then we will have to reinstall the system Software on the PS4. Now the problem here is that people will update the system software instead of reinstalling it.

If you update it, it will not cause any effect as you are installing an update on a corrupt system software.

You can reinstall the system software by following the steps below.
  1. Download the latest system software from Here (Make sure you download the system software and not the system software update)

PlayStation website page to download system software

  2. Format your USB flash drive to exFAT file system.
  3. Create the following directory in the root of your USB flash drive. PS4 > UPDATE
  4. Save the system software you downloaded in step one in the UPDATE folder. The directory should now read PS4 > UPDATE > PS4UDATE.PUP
  5. Plug the USB flash drive to your PS4 and start it in safe mode by pressing and holding the on button until you hear the second beep.
  6. Connect your controller through the USB cable, Press the PS button and select option 7 [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)]

This is one of the best ways you can avoid the error CE-30005-8 on your PS4. Simply keep your PS4 up to date and you will definitely not be meeting this error. You can always check for the latest system software update directly from your PS4.

The PS4 itself will tell you when there is an update needed for your console or you can just set it to automatically update the system software.

2. Rebuild Database once in a while

If you Rebuild Database once in a while you will definitely not be getting the error CE-30005-8. This is because the hard drive will be defragmented all the time and this will make the system to easily get the files it needs and avoid this error.

You can Rebuild Database may once or twice a month. This will also keep your console running smoothly.

3. Avoid Turning off your console when installing Applications

When you are installing application on your PS4 please avoid turning off your console. This will make the installation file to become corrupt and bring you the error CE-30005-8 cannot start application.

4. Choose SSD over HDD

This is one of the best ways to avoid this error. I prefer SSD over HDD on the PS4 as you will not have to worry about fragmentation or forgetting to defrag your HDD. Defragging an SSD doesn't improve it's performance and the SSD doesn't really become fragmented.

5. Clean your Game Disk/Avoid direct sunlight

You can avoid this error by cleaning your game disks, making sure they are clean free of finger prints and scratches. Also ensure that where you store your game disks is not affected by direct sunlight as this will degrade your game disk.

When you are doing this you will not be encountering this error.
