Why won't my PS4 controller connect in safe mode

Your PS4 controller can't connect in safe mode because the PS4 console doesn't boot the whole system up when booted into safe mode. It disables most of the things including Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is the one responsible for connecting your PS4 controller to your PS4 console. If it is disabled, then your controller will not connect to the PS4 console through Bluetooth.

How do I connect my PS4 controller in safe mode

To connect your PS4 controller in safe mode you need to connect it through a USB cable and press the PS button. This way the PS4 will be able to detect the controller though the USB cable and sync it.

I still can't connect my PS4 controller in safe mode

If you still can't connect your PS4 controller in safe mode after using a USB cable then lets go through some faults that maybe at hand and how to resolve them.

The USB cable is not a data cable

The PS4 will only connect to a PS4 controller through a USB data cable when it is in safe mode.

There are many USB cables out there that are not data cables. If your cable is not a data cable the PS4 will recognize the controller but it will charge it.

How do I know If I have a data USB cable?

To know if you have a data cable or not you will need a PC/Mac. Connect any device to your PC/Mac through the USB cable you are using to connect your PS4 controller.

If the device you are connecting to your PC/Mac gets detected then you have a data cable. Otherwise swap it with a data cable.

USB cable is faulty

A faulty USB cable will most likely make your PS4 controller not to connect to the PS4 in safe mode. This is because a faulty USB cable will not be able to transfer data.

With that said, the PS4 will fail to communicate with controller because there is no data connection between the two.

You can fix this by replacing the USB cable with a working one or get one at local store. Make sure you are getting a USB cable that supports data transfer or you will not solve anything.

Controller USB port is faulty

Another possible reason why your controller isn't connecting in safe mode could be a faulty USB port on the controller. The PS4 controller has a USB port which can wear out overtime and stop transferring data.

You can test if the port is working fine by connecting your PS4 controller to a PC through a known working USB cable that can transfer data and see if it gets recognized by your PC.

Assuming that the controller doesn't get recognized by the PC then we can conclude that the USB port is faulty on the controller and needs replacement.

However, If the controller does get recognized then we can say that the port on the PS4 is faulty.

Faulty PS4 USB port

The USB ports on the PS4 console can fail over time. However, they won't fail all at once. If you are using the right most port try using the left one.

Alternatively if you have a PS4 Pro you can connect through the USB port on the back of the console.

To test if the USB ports on your console are faulty just plug in a working USB flash drive and see if it gets recognized.

Third party controller

Most third party unlicensed PS4 controllers will not work in safe mode. These controllers will just not connect no matter what you do.

The best thing to do is to get an official PS4 controller and connect it through the USB cable.
